Real Raw – Day 38 – Getting the Hang of Things

27 10 2008

The kids are up at 6:30 am this morning. Ugh. I’m not ready. My alarm was set for 7:00 , which was supposed to be 45 minutes before they woke up! Fortunately, they’re old enough to be left alone long enough for me to take a shower. I wasn’t ready for their energy today, but we work it out.

Breakfast: Buckwheat granola, almond milk, 1/2 banana

Snack: 1/3 cup pumpkin pudding (leftover)

Lunch: 1/2 sandwich – not tuna on kamut bread with lettuce, 1 sliced apple

Afternoon snack: roasted pumpkin seeds, tea

Dinner: Soup – made up on the spot with what was on hand — 1 zucchini (peeled), 1/2 orange, 1 very small apple, 1 1/2 packed cup of lettuce, 1 clove garlic, dill, cayenne, salt & pepper to taste — blended with enough water (about 1/2 cup) to achieve the right consistency. I was surprised by how good it was; the sweetness of the fruit was offset by the spiciness of the cayenne and pepper. I can see that making soups will be easy — it all depends on what you have on hand.

Dessert: handful of grapes

I like this raw lifestyle. I feel as though I’m beginning to get the hang of it. I’ve spent a lot of time in the last few days reading Raw Revolution and getting a good understanding of things. I haven’t lost weight because calories are calories, whether you get them from meat or nuts. Good oils are good for you, but if you’re desiring to lose weight, then you need to keep things in balance and increase the plant-based foods. Period.

By the way, that book has some great nutritional information. On the other hand, I’ve been very disappointed with “The Idiots Guide to Eating Raw.” The book contains misinformation (such as 1 kg = 1 lb), a lot typos, and the calorie counts, etc. on the recipes — for someone who has spent a lot of time counting calories and knows her stuff — are obviously incorrect.
